With the rapid development of the iron and steel industry, the continuous casting technology has made great progress and improvement. However, there are still defects in the slab surfaces to form, because of the factors with the casting speed, flux performance, liquid steel components, etc. Currently, many domestic and foreign steel companies adopt the traditional eye detection in the production and testing process. Because of this detection method is easily affected by a variety of human factors, so it is impossible to avoid missed and false detection, and the quality of steel is low. It is seriously affected the production efficiency. Therefore, preventing the generation of surface defects in the continuous casting slab is of great importance to improve the efficiency of production and product quality. At the same time, real-time forecasting of continuous casting slab crack is currently one of the urgently address issue for the major steel companies.The system combined with infrared thermal image technology and pattern recognition technology to develop an effective slab cracking forecasting system can reasonable guide the operator to control the casting process parameters, reduce the surface crack and ensure product quality. First, using gray level correction method to reduce the effect of noise, improve the image contrast and achieve the effect of image enhancement. Then the average filtering method is adopted to enhance the low frequency component and suppress high frequency components. Next, through comparing the merits of some edge detection operator can know that Gauss-Laplace operator is the best method to detect the edge of crack. Finally, using regional labeling method can calculate the feature information of crack of length, perimeter, area, etc. Then system can identify the crack according to the rules that have been developed. The system uses the software of halcon to process the image. System develops the continuous casting slab crack detection system based on VB. And it is powerful, the interface is relatively simple.
