Textile is mainly made of fiber and has special physical porous structure, it easily absorbs moisture and mold in a humid environment. So give the textile antibacterial function is very necessary. The antibacterial fibers on the market are mainly be added some organic, inorganic and natural antibacterial agents to achieve the purpose of antibacterial at present. Sulfur is seldom used as an antibacterial agent. In this paper, sulfur was used for study on modification of polypropylene(PP) fiber material. Sulfur would migrate on the surface of PP to achieve the antibacterial effect as sulfur and PP are incompatible.Firstly, sulfur and PP fiber material were directly blended. The migration effect of sulfur was studied by SEM and iodine method. The results showed that sulfur migrated on the surface of PP after PP/sulfur blends placing for a period of time.the particle size of sulfur was proportional to the precipitation rate of sulfur as well as the sulfur content and the time of placement. The results of DSC and POM indicated that the sulfur could improve the processability of PP to a certain extent and played the role of lubrication. As a result, PP had better spinning performance. Sulfur could also induce PP to crystallize at high temperature and make the PP grains smaller as a heterogeneous nucleating agent. Too much sulfur in PP was difficult to disperse uniformly, it would destroy the crystallization. In order to control the precipitation rate and improve the dispersion of sulfur in PP, the compatilizer sulfurized polyethylene(PE)was synthesized by reacting high density polyethylene(HDPE) with sulfur under different conditions. FTIR,TG and solubility experiment methods were carried on the characterization of the sulfurized PE. The results showed that HDPE only could react with sulfur to form the C-S bond for generating sulfurized PE under the high temperature of 220℃, catalyst diphenyl guanidine could improve the degree of reaction, which made the synthesized PE be more difficult to dissolve in xylene. Then the synthesized PE was used to add into PP/sulfur blend(the mass fraction of sulfur was 30%)as a compatibilizer and its application in the blend was studied, it indicated that the synthesized PE had good compatibilization effect on the blend. In the PP and sulfur blend system of which mass radio is 75/25, when the content of the synthesized PE was 5 phr, the tensile strength of the blend increased 7.69% and the elongation at break increased 21.62% comparing with those of the lend without the synthesized PE.Antifungal properties of PP/sulfur blends was preliminary studied in this paper. Results showed that the sulfur had a certain inhibitory effect on the fungi, the antibacterial effect was more obvious if the sulfur content was higher and the particle size was smaller. Nano sulfur had the best antibacterial effect.
