The quality of water environment affects the human daily life, industrial and agricultural production, social sustainable development etc. With the popularity and expansion of the Internet, today society has entered ’Internet of things’ era. People also put forward higher requirements for the water environment protection and supervision. Traditional water environment monitoring schemes is lack of timesaving, monitoring scope and resources. It gradually become difficult to adapt to the current trend of network information.Wireless sensor network collects sensor technology, embedded processing, wireless communication and routing networking technologies in the same time. It gets the information of perception for a large range of monitoring area by microelectronic integrated sensor with low cost. And it uploads the environmental or monitoring object information to the user through the corresponding network protocol. The rapid progress of technology of wireless sensor network, has also brought the new idea and the development to the field of water environment monitoring.First of all, originally designs a new type of water environment monitoring system based on Zig Bee and 3G communication technology using the technology of wireless sensor network. The whole system structure, the main work of the modules and the function of data transmission has been designed and introduced. On this basis, mainly has taken a detailed look at the networking protocol on water environment monitoring: The original Zig Bee network mode is not suitable for large-scale and complicated network application. According to the application characteristics of water environment monitoring, this paper presents an improved algorithm of network for the special application field of water environment monitoring. For the improvements in networking algorithm, it uses the PEGASIS protocol as the network infrastructure and it is very suitable for water environment monitoring’s characteristics such as large scale network, complex topology environment, replacing the batteries difficultly but relative low requirements for communication rate. After analysis, it uses the way of double chain heads for network topology and information transmission borrowing from ant meeting algorithm, which shortens the network communication delay. Through the packet loss rate of CC2530 test, a distance threshold as the adjacent node spacing limit weight has been determined for further equilibrium between energy consumption and the communication quality of the whole network. Finally, the applicability of the algorithm is discussed through the MATLAB simulation. The simulation results show that the proposed network protocol can be used in large-scale network. It has balanced the network energy consumption by prolonging network lifetime and the optimization effect of the whole network communication quality is obvious. The design of this algorithm conforms to the application characteristics of water environment monitoring, which lays a foundation for the further study of the technology in the field of wireless sensor networks.
