As a kind of new intelligent material, magnetorheological fluids(MRF) are composed of micron magnetic particles, carrier liquid and dispersants. When an external magnetic field is applied, MRF would turn the original liquid state to solid-like state and the apparent viscosity would increase a few orders of magnitude. This kind of change is rapid, reversible and controllable by the applied magnetic field. MRF has been highly regarded and widely researched by domestic and international scholars due to its excellent rheological property, and it has been widely applied in many fields such as mechanical engineering, bioengineering mechanical, aerospace and medical science. Magnetorheological fluid transmission technology is a kind important application of MRF devices which has many advantages relative to traditional transmission mode such as simpler structure, quick response speed, easy to control, high transmission efficiency, etc. Therefore, it has wide prospect for engineering application. The main work and conclusions in this paper are as follows:(1) The composition, preparation method, and magnetorheological effect of MRF is researched. Then macroscopic constitutive model of MRF yield stress and MRF working mode is introduced. The yield stress of MRF prepared is tested and a macroscopic model is proposed to reveal the yield stress change rule with magnetic field intensity.(2) The definition, principle, characteristics of MRF transmission technology is introduced and performance requirement and failure mode of MRF transmission technology is researched. MRF transmission device is designed and manufactured based on structural design and magnetic design theory and magnetic circuit simulation is processed.(3) MRF transmission system is built and transmission medium test experiment, magnetic field measurement experiment and transmission characteristics experiment are researched. Experiment result shows: the MRF we prepared has excellent properties and can meet the requirements; magnetic field distribution is uniform which benefit with the simulation result; MRF transmission system has good transmission characteristics.(4) The working principle and speed adjustment method of MRF transmission system is researched. The fussy control strategy for MRF transmission in starting procedure is proposed and some speed adjustment experiments are processed and characteristics of MRF speed adjustment are summarized.
