Directional solidification and electromagnetic shaping have been used widely in the research of materials. In this paper, on the basis of directional solidification, electromagnetic shaping and ZMLMC, the process of soft contact electromagnetic shaping and directional solidification (SCEMSDS) is presented, and study on it has been carried out experimentally. According to characteristics of SCEMSDS, an apparatus has been designed and manufactured. The apparatus, characterized by wide speed range and multi-function, successfully meet the requirements of stainless steel and high temperature alloy in SCEMSDS process. Magnetic flux density in mould and induction heat of ingot have been measured. 1. The distributions of magnetic flux density in mould of A1203 and BN are as same as that without mould. 2. Magnetic flux density in mould varies according to induction power, and its distributions are the same before and after change. 3. On the cross section, magnetic flux density of the center is stronger than that of the edge, and the distributions of the center and the edge are the same. 4. Fore and aft induction heat distribution(center and edge) is obtained. The technological parameters?relationship and their effects on surface quality have been investigated experimentally, and the applications of parameters are obtained. It is shown that the position of solid-liquid interface is the key factor that affects the surface quality. It is proved that when parameters are as follows: the inductor inside diameter is 40cm, the cast speed V=100-200p mlmin, the voltage is 220V, the current is 70A, excellent surface quality is prone to be produced. In mould, temperature of melt alloy has two sections: heating area and solidification area. Temperature gradient of 200K/cm was obtained in the melt of stainless steel...
