Three polyesters containing Fluorescein in the backbone and three polyamidescontaining Acridine Yellow in the backbone were prepared by solutionpolycondensation of fluorescent compound (Fluorescein or Acridine Yellow) withacid chloride. The influence factors of the polymerization were discussed and thefluorescence properties of these polymers in different solvents were measured.Correlation between polymer chain structure and fluorescence intensity wasobserved. Stokes shift and fluorescence intensity of these polymers increased withthe increase of solvents?polarity and greatly increased while hydrogen bond wasformed between solvent and the fluorescent group. Fluorescence intensity of thesepolymers was also increased with the increase of the stiffness of polymer chainstructure, and some additional increase was occurred while big conjugated system orhydrogen bond was formed in polymer chain. Fluorescence intensity of thepolyamides containing Acridine Yellow was stronger than that of the polyesterscontaining Fluorescein. Fluorescence intensity of the polyesters containingFluorescein increased with increasing content of the polymer in dilute solution, butdecreased with increasing content of the polymer in concentrated solution.Polymer containing pendant fluorescein group was synthesized by radicalsolution polymerization. The influence factors of the reaction were discussed.Fluorescence spectra of the monomer and polymer were determined. Fluorescenceintensity of this polymer was stronger than that of the monomer and stronger thanthat of the polyesters containing Fluorescein in the backbone. Fluorescent polymercontaining Fluorescein and Naphthalene in pedant chain was also synthesized, andits UV absorption spectra and fluorescence characters were tested. Energy transferhappened in this polymer. All these results are attributed to predict polymer'sfluorescence properties and to develop excellent fluorescent polymer.
