Sodium Polyvinyl alcohol Sulfate (SPS) was prepared through sulfonation of polyvinyl alcohol(PVA, molecule weight: 124,000) and was applied to modify the poly(sodium acrylate) superabaorbent(SA). AA-based superabsorbent interpenetrated with SPS (SA-IP-SPS) was prepared by static -state aqueous solution polymerization method. Partly neutralized acrylic acid was used as reacting monomer, N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide (NMBA) as crosslinker and potassium persulfate as initiator. The IR, thermogravimetric behavior and the sulfur content before and after swelling of SA-IP-SPS was investigated, the analytic results indicated that SPS had been embedded in the polymeric network of polyacrylate through entanglement with polyacrtlate chains. SA-IP-SPS was an novel superabsorbent with the interpenetrating network structure.SA-IP-SPS showed superior properties such as higher water and saline absorbency than SA, which was related to the stronger degree of ionization of the polymeric network and the stronger hydrophilicity of -OSCV.The polymerization conditions of SA-IP-SPS, including water bath temperature, the initial concentration of monomer, the degree of neutralization and the dosage of crosslinker, initiator and SPS were investigated respectively. The experiment results showed the optimal polymerization conditions was as follows: the water bath temperature was 70 癈, the initial concentration of monomer was 25%, the degree of neutralization was 50%, and the dosage of crosslinker, initiator, SPS was l%o, 3%o, 2% respectively. In order to research the effect of superabsorbent on the ability to restrain water vaporization and construct the water stable aggregates of Lateritic Red Soil. Superabsorbents were employed including SA, SA-IP-SPS,AA-AM to modify the Lateritic Red Soil. The introduction of superabsorbent decreased the water vaporization of soil, the higher dosage of superabsorbent, the more efficient The influence of superabsorbent on the aggregate construction of the soil was investigated too. The higher of the superabsorbent dosage, the higher of the sum content of water stable aggregates(>0.25mni). When the dosage was increased to 0.3%, the content of water stable aggregates(>0.25mm) was 99.9%. With increase of superabsorbent dosage, the sum content of water stable aggregates(>0.25mm) kept unchanged, but the content of larger aggregates(>4mm,4~2mm,2~1mm) increased remarkably. Furthermore, the effect of SA-IP-SPS and AA-AM was more efficient than SA.The influence of particle size of the superabsorbent on the ability to restrain water vaporization and construct the water stable aggregates of Lateritic Red Soil was also stuied. Under the same conditions, the effects of small particles were better.
