Coal gasification, a clean energy technology, can improve the coal utilization efficiency and reduce the environment pollution, comparing to the direct coal combustion. And coal gasification with an arc plasma as an auxiliary heat source is a very promising one with many advantages such as rapid reaction rate, broad application range for different kinds of coal and being environmental friendly. The key equipment for coal gasification is the plasma reactor, which will determine the thermal efficiency of the plasma source and the conversion ratio of coal to gas. On the base of research of the contemporary chemically reacting flow models, the following work with respect to the modeling of gasification process and reaction mechanism has been done: learning the advanced plasma gasification theory and experience from Russia, analyzing their one-dimensional program and using it to calculate the gasification process of on kind of China coal; A 3-D numerical simulation system, based on the flow-analyzing package STAR-CD, has been developed to analysis the complex flow hi plasma reactors for coal gasification. On the basis of the analytical results, a different plasma reactor configuration has been suggested. Numerical simulations for the new geometry model have been carried out hi an attempt to optimize the reactor; Different approaches have been explored to model the two-phase flow and the chemical reactions. The numerical simulation results shows that the new reactor model has an improved thermal efficiency of plasma source and the conversion ratio of the gasification. It can be concluded that the numerical simulation system can be used for the optimization of the plasma reactors design.
