The factors affecting coal pillar stability are discussed, and the technical way reducing coal pillar size and enhancing recovery ratio is put forward by means of rock bolting. The size effect > form effect, in situ stresses> lateral restraint , which affect coal strength and stress distribution , are analyzed through numerical simulation and theoretical deduction . The coal pillar design and bolting reinforcement mechanics are also studied . According to the characteristic of room-and-pillar mining, a 3D finite difference model has been built and Hoek-Brown criterion has been adopted to research the effect factors. The research results discover the usual rule of coal pillar strength and coal pillar deformation, and indicate that lateral restraint is the main factor to influence coal pillar strength. It is feasible to increase coal pillar stability and coal pillar strength with bolting reinforcement. Connected the research results with Sihe coal mine, the scheme of coal pillar optimum design in Sihe coal mine has been put forward .These studies have evident theoretical significance to decrease coal pillar size and enhance recovery ratio, and practical importance to solve the problems of irregular seam mining in our country.
