The neutral process for making HAN in the medium of water is studied in this paper. HAS, NaOH and HNO3 are selected for the raw materials,feasibility of the reaction is firstly demonstrated with principle, and Based on the principle, the examining process is designed, the main process is divided into two steps: in the first step, the hydroxylammonium solution, the middle production, is generated by neutralizing hydroxylammonium sulfate with sodium hydroxide, and the aqueous solution is purified by being filtered and distillation under reduced presser; in then second step, a nitric acid/water is neutralized with the proper amount of the distilled aqueous hydroxylammonium solution whereby the essential hydroxylammonium nitrate solution is obtained. Based on experiments, every process condition of the two step is independently investigated. During HA made step, the effect of various factors to the yield and concentration of middle production is discussed. These factors include the rate of HAS to NaOH, reaction time, reaction temperature, raw material concentrations, feed direction, filterer temperature, washing water capacity and the vacuity, bath temperature and quantity of the ascorbic acid addition in the distillation under reduced presser, of which the concentration of hydroxylammonium sulfate, concentration of sodium hydroxide, reaction temperature and feed direction are the mostly factors, and the effect of the former three factors to the yield and concentration of HA solution is very complicated, so orthogonal experiment is carried out to make certain the effect of these three factors, and by this mean optimal technical conditions are obtained. The yield and concentration of production is estimated and higher results are achieved under the optimal technical conditions; during HAN made step, feed direction, reaction temperature, nitric acid concentration and the PH of reaction end-point are studied and determined. Experimental results show that the yield of HAN and feasible of the process are primary determined by feed direction. Finally, the quality analyzing result is given and the problems that may be come forth about the quality and yield have being discussed. Analyzing result of the final production shows that the quality HAN solution prepared by this process satisfies the request of liquid propellant and gas generator.
