Blank design is important in sheet metal forming process. The finite element inverse approach is an accurate and rapid method of Blank design. It enables easy determination of various process variables for metal forming process. The algorithm of inverse approach has been fully discussed in the present paper, and the initial guess method of inverse mapping with linear deformation has been improved partially. Based on the algorithm of inverse approach, a blank prediction program for sheet metal part has been developed. The blanks of the square cup, oil pan and tapered basin have been calculated by using the present program, which agree well with the results of commercial software, i.e. FastBlank. Finally, the blank shape of a fan leaf, calculated by this program, has been validated by actual forming.
