Biodegradable materials have received a great deal of attentions during the last two decades. Poly (ε-caprolactone) is focused on because of its great potential applications as a kind of biodegradable and biomedical material. Its properties have been introduced simply in this paper: and four ring-opening polymerization methods including the mechanism and reaction features have been reviewed in details. Some problems in the application of PCL are also involved. Poly (ε-caprolactonc) was prepared by bulk polymerization, and the method of radiation cross-linking was applied to improve the heat resistant property of PCL.In the preparation of PCL, some factors that will affect the molecular weight of PCL, such as the content of initiator, reaction temperature, reaction lime and so on, were investigated. It is concluded that the ring-opening polymerization of s-caprolactone is not a kind of living-polymerization because of the impurities in the system, and that the transesterization is a very important factor to influence the molecular weight of PCL.The result of modification shows that PCL can be cross-linked by radiation and the radiation cross-linking of PCL follows the theory of random cross-linking. The crystal, mechanical and biodegradable properties of cross-linking PCL were studied in this paper because of the great changes in the inner-structure of PCL after cross-linking.The heat resistant property of PCL is improved after cross-linking, so the method of radiation cross-linking is feasible to melioration the heat resistant property of PCL.
