The modification of bacterial poly(β -hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) by chemical and physical methods is investigated in this article. The raw material of PHB was blended with various fillers, plastics and rubber. The mechanical properties of the blends were analysed. Furthermore, the thermal property, processability and degradable property of the blends of material/rubber were studied. Utimately, the blend of materia170/rubber30 was selected to make package materials. And PHB was made as the scaffold of the tissue engineering. Graft polymerization of acrylamide onto PHB film by free radical polymerization was studied. The effect of several polymerization conditions such as reaction time, initiator and monomer concentration on the graft% was studied. The results of infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrate that graft polymerization of acrylamide onto PHB was achieved. The hydrophilic property of grafted material was improved.
