As a grain refinement technique of outside physical field, electric modification treatment is researched by a lot of physicist and metallurgist at domestic and overseas. It has an important effect on manufacturing finished products and semi-finished products. At the same time, it foreshows huge market foreground. Strong electric pulse integrating with foundry technique might produce a new process, which can refine the grain size and improve the forming quality of castings.In this work, we made a pulse generator with high voltage(the maximal voltage 2.5KV ) and huge current(the maximal peak value 1.7MA) by ourselves, XJDMC-1 electric, pulse generator equipment. It is easy to control and can adjust the charge voltage, deposited energy capacity, charge and discharge time. Besides, the voltage and time can be displayed through LED. Two schemes of control system were designed and made. One is total hardware control; the other is realized through the AT89C51 singlechip control board. The second can real time control charge and discharge switches exactly. The former is used simply, which is ranging between 0.2s and 9.90s; the latter is used accurately, which is ranging between 1ms and 9990ms. The experiment results proof that the performance of equipment can satisfy the needs of scientific research and real production.The sand mould and plaster mould of casting alloy Al-4wt%Cu and industrialization alloy ZL102 were electric modification treated by using the self-made XJDMC-1 electric pulse equipment. Effects of the characteristic parameter of electric pulse on the microstructures and the mechanical properties of alloys were studied. The results show that under the certain pour times of electric pulse, the high strength electric pulse has the effects to improve the surface quality of castings, decrease the casting defect, and refine the grain microstructure. The average grain size can be refined to micron. In addition, the method can improve the mechanical properties of casting, such as the elongation and intensity. They increased 50% and 21.5% respectively. So using optimization parameters of electric modification treatment process, can achieve the effect of traditional Na alterative.
