In this thesis, progresses and developments of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber were reviewed, the properties of it were introduced, and the surface modifications, applications and composites of it were reviewed. On the basic of these, following studies on UHMWPE fibers were carried out.Firstly, UHMWPE fibers were treated by four kinds of treatment solutions. Fourier transform spectrum (FTIR) was employed to character the change of chemical content of the fiber; scanning electro micrograph (SEM) contact angle and single fiber pull-out test are employed to show the changes of the surface properties of the fiber. And single fiber strength experiment was used to show the strength loss because of the treatments. It shows that, the chrome acid can improve the surface properties efficiently at 85℃ for 3 minutes with little strength loss.Secondly, With methy methacrylate (MMA), butyl acrylate (BA), acrylic acid (AA) and hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) as monomers and composition of sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), OP-10 and 2-octyl alcohol as emulsifier, polyacrylate micro emulsions used as UHMWPE fiber adhesive and coatings were synthesized by emulsion copolymerization when BA : MMA : AA : HEA=50 : 50 : 3 : 10 and w(composite emulsifier)=13% at 80℃ for 3h. The monomer conversion was 99.8%, the diameter of the latex particle was 30nm and the glass transition temperature was -28℃. The application method was simple and the emulsion membrane have excellent properties such as adhesive ability, softness and abrasion resistance. Finally, the effect of twist and adhesive on the mechanical properties of UHMWPE fibers and the friction and abrasion of adhesive-pretreated UHMWPE fibers surface were investigated. The results show that the strength of UHMWPE fibers decreased rapidly with the increase of twist, and increased evidently with the adhesive-pretreated on the fiber surface. When the modified neoprene or polyurethane adhesive content in UHMWPE fibers was 6%, the strength of UHMWPE fibers increased 17.6% and 13.9%, respectively. It was also found that the friction and abrasion resistance of polyurethane was the best one in the four choosed adhesives.
