The perties and fabrication procedure of the cemented carbideswith gradient surface zone were extensively investigated in this paper.Gradient cemented carbide substrate was obtained sucessufully by means of multi-steps and sucessive sintering methods. And the results showed that multi-steps sintering method is the proper way to obtain the gradient cemented carbide substrate with excellent properties. The influence of Co and Ti(CN) on the formation of gradient cemented carbide was investigated, the results demonstrated that as the cobalt content increased, the more thickness of the gradient structure is. For the cemented carbide substrate with the same cobalt content, the coersive force and magnetism saturation decreased after gradient sintering and coating. When the cobalt content kept constant, the coersive force and magnetism saturation decreased and the hardness and transverse rupture strength of the cemented carbide increased after gradient sintering and coating. As Ti(CN) content increased , the coersice force and hardness increased, meanwhile, the density, magnetism saturation and transverse rupture strength decreased, also, the thickness of the gradient structure become more distinct. When the Ti(CN) content kept constant, the coersive force and magnetism saturation decreased and the hardness and transverse rupture strength of the cemented carbide increased after gradient sintering and coating. When the composition of the substraste and the coating were keep the same, the cutting tests demonstrated that the cutting property of the coated cemented carbide with gradient substrate was much better than those without gradient substrate. The severability of FGCC-Co-6 coated cemented carbide with gradient substrate was about one and a half of that of C312 coated cemented cemented carbide without gradient substrate when VB=0.25. The severability of FGCC-Co-8 coated cemented carbide with gradient substrate was about one and a half of that of C314 coated cemented cemented carbide without gradient substrate when VB=0.15. And the cutting properties of FGCC-Co-8 was better than FGCC-Co-6. the cutting property of the coatedcemented carbide fabricated those of by this method was about the same as that of the products made by Sandvik Company.
