A strain of acid a-amylase producing fungi was screened from soil. It is identified as Penicillium and named as AAl. Acid a-amylase which is extracellular in incubation period of AAl can be purified by salt out and gel-filteration. The optimum temperature of acid a-amylase is 60癈 and the optimum pH is 4.4. The molecular weight of the purified acid a-amylase is about 85kD.The results of thin-layer chromatography demonstrate that the products from starch catalyzed by the enzyme are oligosaccharide and dextrin. This enzyme should be classified as an a-amylase.
