As well known, gray iron is not difficult to cut. But in our practical production, the cutting tools are consumed a lot, and the processing cost is greatly high. In recent years, Chinese and foreign experts have made much investigation on the influence of the gray iron workability. In this research, the specimens with different titanium content were tested through machine work to improve the machinability of cast iron considering practical production. Metallographic analysis, morphology and element analysis were observed and measured by metallographic microscope and scanning electron microscope.First, it was found that the structure of domestic cast iron is obviously different from oversea one combining the existence state and distribution of microelement in domestic and oversea cast iron and that the compound containing titanium of domestic one was evidently higher than that of oversea one.Second, it was discovered that the cutting tools were abraded severely with the amount of titanium increasing after cutting test and analyzing the cut performance at different cutting condition of cast iron bars containing different titanium content. However the cutting tools were abraded severely with increasing the cutting speed when the content of titanium in cast iron is equal. Additionally, titanium content had the same effect on abrasion speed of cutting tools when titanium content is more than 0.045%, but titanium content obviously influence abrasion speed when content is less than 0.045%.In a word, the machinability of cast iron was influenced by titanium. Practically it is difficult to control the amount of titanium, but the service longevity and efficiency of cutting tools were markedly enhanced through technique amelioration such as modifying the structure and component of cutting tools.
