In this paper, the polymerization of maleimides catalysed by nanoparticles was studied.Firstly, homopolymerization of maleic anhydride and maleidides was experimented. The reaction condition parameters of bulk and solution polymerization of maleic anhydride were selected by orthogonal experiment. It is found that the catalytic effect obvious added with the increasing of temperature and dosage of catalyst in solution polymerization. The catalytic effect of nanocatalysts is better than the traditional catalysts and nano-titanium and nano-magnesia is the best ones of them. Catalytic mechanism was analyzed by comparing the catalytic effect of nanoparticles pretreated in different way. In the second part, the geometric structures, electron densities, thermodynamic properties of maleimides were analysed by quantum calculation and the affect of solvent to every structure was discussed. The transition state of initiation reaction of polymerization has been found, which proves the anionic polymerization mechanism. In propagation reaction, the varieties of structure and property of N-substituted maleimides were studied by comparing the dimer and trimer with the monomer.
