β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) can wrap some appropriate molecules forming inclusion compound as it has special cylinder-shaped hydrophobic cavity. In this paper, β-CD is grafted onto cotton fabric permanently by chemical methods for absorb offensive odor which can impart deodorization characteristic to fabric. Two kinds of chemical grafting methods, crosslinking by polycarboxic acids and binding onto cotton directly with monochlorotrazinyl modified β-CD (MCT-β-CD) are studied. The β-CD content on fabric, the fabric properties after being grafted, the affecting factors during graft reaction, and the reaction mechanism are investigated. The optimal formulas for grafting β-CD onto cotton are recommended through great number of experiments. In citric acid(CA)/β-CD procedure, they are β-CD 80g/L, CA 100g/L, sodium hypophosphite (SHP) 30 g/L, and curing 4 minutes with temperature of 190℃, in 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA)/β-CD procedure, are β-CD 100g/L, BTCA 100g/L, SHP 30g/L, and curing 4 minutes at 180℃, while in MCT-β-CD procedure, MCT-β-CD 90g/L, sodium carbonate 40g/L, sodium sulfate 60g/L, and curing 3 minutes at 160℃. After treated with β-CD, some film-like cover on fiber surface can be observed obviously comparing that of untreated fiber under scanning electron microscope which means β-CD fixed on fiber.A new method for measuring β-CD on fiber quantitatively is developed based on normally used phenolphthalein indicator method. Immerse treated fabric in dilute alkali solution and then measure the solution by spectroscopic method with phenolphthalein indicator. β-CD is removed from cotton and transferred into solution completely because the ester linkages connecting cyclodextrins and cotton are destroyed by alkali. Thus β-CD can be more accurately measured than by other normal methodsWhen grafted on fiber, β-CD can absorb perfume which decrease perfume's volatility, keep fragrance permanent, and impart fabric deodorization effect. In addition, β-CD can also adsorb or wrap some effluvium molecules, and obtain deodorization effect. Consequently, β-CD has double deodorization function.
