Cutting database provides users with the cutting information of the workpiece, machining tools, cutting tools, cutting parameters, cutting fluids and so on. Conventional method acquiring cutting information by manual has been changed by cutting database that makes the user rapidly choose cutting tools and selects the reasonable cutting parameters. Cutting database has been widely applied into enterprises.As a part of manufacturing resource, cut tool is not only an important appurtenance in manufacturing activities, but also costly consumed resource. At present, China's enterprises commonly have two following problems. Firstly, solid tool systems-TSG are the main tools for numerical machine. They have obvious shortages in manufacturing. Each cutting tool is equipped with a toolholder, which makes the cost of tools increased and leads to decrease the utilization efficiency. Once part of the system (such as single cutting edge) is damaged, the whole tool system is out of use, which brings to the great waste of resource. Secondly, there is large number of cutters with complicated information in NC workshop. Cutting tools are frequently shifted between machines, which results in the delayed of cutters, prolongs final processing of workpiece and affects processing tasks. To solve above problems, modular division on tool components and intelligent assembly are presented in this thesis. It can obviously reduce the waiting-time of cutting tools and resolve the issues of low utilization of resource and high costs of cutting tools. Modular design of tooling system is in favor of the standardization of information description on cutting tools, and can obtain optimum tools and cutting parameters rapidly and easily.Based on STEP-NC data modeling, the paper sets up the relation model of machining parts in common using by analyzing parts' character, which is used as the reference to tool choosing. So database has been found.It can meet process needs with the least cutter types and quantities, reduce cutter stock and redundancy, greatly increase productivity and lower manufacturing costs through intelligent selection system of tooling system as well as the cutting database.
