At present, more and more municipal wastewater treatment plants have been building or in use. The investment in the built and running of such a plant is huge. So a reasonable design and high-qualified running technique is important. But the research on the wastewater treatment in our country falls behind the other countries. Contrast with other industries, ripe experiences on the running of wastewater treatment plant is still absent. The maintenance of these plants is difficult, and the environmental and social benefit is hard to achieve. So the study of operation and management for the wastewater treatment techniques has been urgently required on the basis of the theory of water pollution control.As a derivative of traditional oxidation ditch, the improved oxidation ditch technology with particular characteristics has become a promising candidate in the design of municipal wastewater treatment plants. Beneficial explorations and innovations in the mode of aeration, water inlet and operation of this new technology have been made. So research on the rule of start-up and running of the improved oxidation ditch is of great importance for its design and application in the future.The rules of active sludge culture and domestication in the start-up period in the improved oxidation ditch technology have been studied. Meanwhile, the abnormal phenomena of active sludge have been analyzed and the problems have been resolved. Furthermore, the main influential factors which deteriorate the removal of TP have been discussed and several pieces of advice have been given on this question. The main content of this article includes:1. The study about active sludge culture and domestication in the start-up period in the improved oxidation ditch has been made. Correlative questions have answered and experiences and lessons have been summarized.2. The abnormal phenomena of active sludge in the running-in period have been analyzed. Means to preventing and controlling these phenomena have been given. At the same time, the rules of these phenomena's happen have been summarized for the steady running in the future.
