In this thesis, five polydentate ligands including azido, oxalate, terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid and Pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid were used to construct new transition metal complexes (M = Ru, Fe and Zn). Eight new complexes as listed below were synthesized and fully characterized.Ru(dppe)2C2O4(I)Ru(dppm)2C2O4 (II)Ru(dppm)2ClN3 (III)Ru(dppm)2(N3)2 (IV)[Zn(tpa)(quin)]n(V)[Zn(ipa)(quin)]n (VI)[Fe(dipic)2(2,2'-bipy)]·(H2O)3(VII),[Fe(dipic)(H2O)2(NO3)](VIII),Complex I and II were prepared from cis-RuCl2 (P-P)2 and NaC2O4. Oxalate replaces two Cl atoms of the cis-RuCl2 (P-P)2 and acts as a chelating bidentate ligand. The uncoordinated two O atoms suggested that complexes I and II may react with other metal ions to form heterobimetallic complexes.Complex III is a mono N3 substituent of cis-RuCl2 (P-P)2. It shows an unusual linear Ru-N-N-N structure, which has never been reported before among the vast Ru azido complexes. Complex IV is a di- N3 substituent of cis-RuCl2 (P-P)2. Two N3 are in the cis- position as in cis-RuCl2 (P-P)2, which is rare among the disubstituted cis-RuCl2(P-P)2 complexes.Complex V shows a one-dimensional 'Z' chain which are linked into two-dimensional lamellar structures by weak π-π stackings. Complex VI shows one-dimensional chiral helical chains which are linked into molecular zipper. Both complexes show strong blue photoluminescent under R.T.Complexes VII and VIII are monometallic complexes of Fe (III). Complex VII can transform to VIII under certain condition.
