Based on the investigation of the status quo of by-product—coal gas—in "KISCO"(Kunming Iron & Steel CO.LTD), this study provided a project proposal to synthesize methanol and dimethyl ether by means of the coal gas generated from the producing of iron and steel.Under the condition of fully optimized use of coal gas, one synthesize product line could produce 50K tone of(dimethyl ether in KISCO which have 5 million tone steel production capability per year. This can be concluded under full investigation of coal gas source in KISCO.The preliminary calculations and feasibility study of this project was conducted. The raw materials H2 (purity > 97 %) and CO (pruity >98 %) could be purified from coke-oven gas and converter gas byemeans of PSA.The method of methanol synthesis is tow pressure catalytic technique at pressure of 5.3 Mpa and 230~260℃, and the one waytransform rates is 68~78%. After fully purified 98% purity or abovecould be aquired. Then use methanol as material, the dimethyl ether can be synthesized by gas phase dehydration of the produced methanol in DME synthetic column at 240 ~ 360℃. The 99 % or above purity of dimethyl ether could be acquired by further purifying.It's an advantage to an iron & steel company that have rich by-product CO and H2 resource. By synthesize methanol and dimethyl ether the exhausted gas, which contain CO and H2, can be fully re-used.If iron&steel corporations wildly adopt this method, the by-product exhausted gas of coke-oven gas and converter gas could be converted to most useful methanol and dimethyl ether. It is a effective way to transfer the resource advantage to economic advantage, and it's also a demonstration to show a new usage of coke-oven energy which follow the nation's environment protection and energy saving policies.it is one of the most effective ways to comprehensively utilize the coal gas in steel manufacturers. This proposal shed light on developing economic recycling in steel manufacturers, implementing the comprehensive utilization of steel resources and achieving the goal of integrating sustainable development of resources, energy and environment.
