The article takes up how to use acid zirconium residue, one kind of industrial residue, to make MgO-MgCl2-SiO2-H2O, which is a kind of quaternary system cementitious materials, and presents a new method of complexly utilizing the zirconium residue. Through XRD, SEM, DTA and TG, the influence of different mixture ratio on the hydration process is analyzed, and modifying the material by adding in the external plugging compound or the additive is researched, and the performance of the product is measured.It is indicated that zirconium residue contains mainly a mass of silica and Cl-. The high-reactivity silica is aggregated of submicron-size amorphous ultramicro particles which is difficult to disperse. In the acidic or alkaline circumstance, gelating phenomena is easily come into being. The H2O and Cl- in the zirconium residue are easy to get together. Through fast ball milling, the aggregate in the zirconium residue are easy to be broken, which is propitious to the proceeding of the subsequent hydration reaction.In the acidic circumstance, the Cl- in the zirconium residue firstly converts into MgCl2 after reacting with MgO, then hydration is occurred and MgO-MgCl2-SiO2-H2O system are generated. By adding a small amount of MgCl2, the activity of Cl- is excited. The sample are made by the pressure forming. Through the research, the optically technology parameters of the reaction between acid zirconium residue and MgO are found, then the situation of solidification of Cl- is calculated. Then the material is modified by adding additive plant fibre and phosphoric acid in, to some degree , through which its water resistance and strength to be increased and its cost decreased. This well supports the use of the material in the near future.Through utilizing the zirconium residue to prepare MgO-MgCl2-SiO2-H2O system, which is low energy-cost, good to the environmental protection and easy to product, the problem that Cl- in the zirconium residue is hard to solidify can be primely solved. The sample made has a compression strength of 30MPa, suitable for the application.
