Most lakes, rivers and ponds in Chinese village are facing an increasing pollution crisis due to the factor resulting from the rural domestic wastewater which is always discharged without treatment. That makes the use of domestic water inconvenient for the villagers. To eliminate the crisis caused by pollution, the rural domestic wastewater treatment capacity must be increased substantially. However, the high capital and operation costs of traditional wastewater treatment plants based on activated sludge process are a heavy burden to most communities, which restrain its development in our country. Under such conditions, stabilization ponds and constructed wetlands, characterized by their low-costs and high performance, become a reasonable choice.The ecological pond system is a novel integrated treatment process, which realizes the combination of wastewater treatment and utilization, and represents one of the most important development trends of wastewater treatment technology. However, at present, due to the lack of practical application data for further optimizing design and operation, the development of ecological pond system has been hindered.In this novel, a new kind of wastewater treatment plant combining Aquamat filler and aquatic plants for the rural domestic wastewater would be showed. In addition, the performance, mechanisms, influence factors of the process were studied systematically.The site of the experiment is in the 1# pond in the Wang village, Yanling town, Danyang city in Jiangsu province. The depth of this pond is about 1.2 meters, while the area of it is about 15mx25m. The eutrophic water in it is mainly caused by the discharging of the rural domestic wastewater. In this experiment, an entrophication water body has been built into a compound ecological pond. It has been divided into three parts with special cloth. In the 1st part Aquamat filler was put down; the aquatic plants were planted in the 2nd part; the last one is a comparison part. The wastewater was discharged before running through the 1st and the 2nd parts.In the experiment, a compound ecological pond has been built, and the removal efficiency has been examined through a long time. The experimental results showed the compound ecological pond composed of Aquamat filler and aquatic plants had obvious effect on the eutrophication water body. The average removal efficiencies of CODcr,BOD5,NH4+-N,TN,TP are 77%,82%,73%,75%,72% in summer; and the data are 72%,78%,67%,70%,65% in winter. When the aquatic plants didn't grow well, however, the removal efficiency decreased. The results also showed that the Aqumat filler, comparing with the aquatic plant, played an more important role in the treatment process.The experiment, in the low temperature season, showed the water quality kept the good level caused by the microorganism when the aquatic plants grew bad. So it was suggested that the aquatic plants could be removed from the system, according to water quality, when they grew bad in the low temperature season.According to the performance, invest analyze and operation cost analyze of the compound ecological pond, we can know that compared with the traditional wastewater treatment plants based on activated sludge process, and on the condition of no account of depreciation, building up the compound ecological pond could reduces architecture invest, and reduces using earth area, shortens the building days, and makes the management conveniently. The results of the test showed the compound ecological pond could meet the needs of treatment and could be a good choice in the restraining development communities in the future as well.
