Ⅳ-VI metal chalocgenide(S or Se) compounds are important narrow-gap semiconductor materials and have been widely used in diverse areas, due to their excellent nonlinear optical properties, luminescence properties, quantum size effect and other important physical and chemical properties that are different from those of their bulk counterparts.Preparing novel nanostructures and investigating their general formation mechanism may be a solution to the precise control of their sizes, dimensionalities and properties. In this paper, two typical metal sulfides were synthesized and their growth mechanisms and properties were discussed. The main contents were described as follows:(1)Lead sulfide (PbS) nanosquares, nanobundles, microrods and microsquares were synthesized by changing reaction conditions such as solution, duration and ratio of raw materials, by using Pb(NO3)2 and CH3CH2OCSSK as raw materials. The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern show the PbS crystals belong to the cubic phase. The influences of the synthesizing conditions on the morphologies of the resulting products have been investigated.(2) Using SnCl2-2H2O and CH3CH2OCSSK as raw materials, tin sulfide(SnS) nanobuldles, nanobelts, microflowers were synthesized by changing reaction conditions such as solution, concentration, duration and ratio of raw materials. In the presence of surfactant oleic acid anions, SnS turned out to be urchin-like microspheres composed by nanobuldles.XRD pattern show the SnS crystals belong to the orthorhombic phase. The influences of the reaction conditions are discussed and a possible mechanism for the formation of SnS crystals is proposed. Finally, optical properties and electrochemical properties of SnS crystals of different morphologies were discussed.
