Organo-vermiculite is synthesized by using cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammo nium bromide(CTMAB),on the basis of fully understanding characters of vermiculite. The capability of adsorbing organic pollutant,such as Methyl orange,RhodamineB, P-nitrophenol,is studied between vermiculite and CTMAB-vermiculite,environmental factors are also included,with a view to provid ing a theoretical basis for the treatment of organic wastewater by using organo-vermiculite Structural characteristics of vermiculite and CTMAB-vermiculite have been studied through SEM.The reused properties of CTMAB-vermiculite are also studied.The results are as follows:(1) Organic carbon content of CTMAB-vermiculite is significantly higher than that of vermin culite.The organic carbon content of CTMAB-vermiculite increases with the amount of surface tant,when the adding amount of surfactant is higher than the cation exchange capacity of vermin culite,organic carbon content of CTMAB-vermiculite increases slowly.(2) Through the organic modification, the surfactant molecules insert into the interlayer of vermiculite, enlarge the vermiculite interlayer space, hydrophobic organic phase is formed through the accumulation of surfactant molecules between vermiculite's layers, this formation is conducive to the adsorption of organic pollutants, the advantages of vermiculite's enormous inner space have fully displayed.(3) Because CTMAB inserts into the interlayer of vermiculite, enlarges the vermiculite inter layer space, CTMAB-vermiculite does not have the compact structure as vermiculite.(4) Low pH is conducive to CTMAB-vermiculite adsorption of methyl orange, however, the best situation for adsorption of rhodamine B and p-nitrophenol is under the alkaline condition.(5) About 30min CTMAB-vermiculite can reach the absorption equilibrium,As the extension of adsorption time,no significant increasement in the total adsorption,the adsorption sites have been basically saturated,and the adsorption content does not reduce,the adsorption of organic pollutants will not easily resolve into the solution, which is different from the other kinds of adsorption.(6) CTMAB-vermiculite can be used to adsorb methyl orange from wastewater many times with high removal rates, the activation temperature of recycled CTMAB- vermiculite has great effect on the capability of reusing, and the activation temperature of recycled CTMAB-vermiculite should be controlled below the initial decomposition temperature of CTMAB.
