This paper is a part of the project the Theory of Large Strain Consolidation and FEM Analysis,supported by the National Scientific Fund (authorized No. 5987902 1).Based on nonlinear continuous mechanics~,this paper uses Updated Lagrangian Formulation to analyze the consolidation behavior of saturated soft clay.The FEM equations and numerical formulas for the Ut. method are derived and brought into the large strain consolidation analysis software LSCFEA,so that it can solve large strain consolidation problems by U.L. method. In the finite element consolidation analysis,the large strain calculation of volumn strain will appear in the continuous equation ,this will make it very complex and inefficient when execute the FEM calculation.This paper compares the differences among three kinds of volumn strain calculation method and points out that the small strain method can be utilized in the FEM program ,which is perfectly acceptable in large scale,and can simplify the calculation and promote the efficiency. By the programs added to the software LSCFEA,an example of saturated soft clay is analyzed .The calculated results from small strain method,T.L. method and U.L. method are compared which including the variation of the value of settlement,horisontal displacement and pore water pressure. Considering the theoretical differences of T.L. method and U.L. method,this paper discusses the time efficiency and applicability approximately.
