ABSTRACTThis paper is mainly concerned with the reliability analysis of a gravity abutment of an arch dam based on conception of reliability. At first, the basic theory and general process of the gravity abutment corresponding with definite solution are simply introduced. The influence of the stiffness of the gravity abutment on the stress of the arch dam is also analyzed. Then combined with reliability computation, the stochastic finite element method is used to establish the relationship between the load effect (stress or force) and basic stochastic variable dealing with statistical features of variables. Based on the stochastic finite element method, the reliability of the arch dam gravity abutment is analyzed, and the corresponding reliability index is calculated. The influence of the selection of the shearing resistance and the seepage pressure on the reliability index is analyzed; meanwhile, the influence of the distribution types, cut- tail and correlation of the stochastic variable on the reliability is discussed. Finally, some significance conclusions are drawn through the gravity abutment of a double-curvature arch dam analyzed and calculated. The results can be referred to actual engineering.
