The giant magnetostrictive material is a new functional material, which has high magnetostriction, which has high response velocity, high energy density, big output force. Because of the choiceness properties of the GMM, many researchers of the world countries now have taken part in studying it. Also its corresponding theory and applications studies are being researched.In chapter 1, the magnetostrictive mechanism of the giant magnetostrictive materials and the main features of the materials are introduced briefly, and the research background including the materials applications in abroad and home is given. Furthermore, the problems existing in the update applications are pointed out. Especially the various applications of the magnetostrictive material in fluid power -transmission and control are also introduced. All other kinds of applications and its properties of the giant magnetostrictive materials are particularly addressed. Also theapplications of the GMM in abroad and home are given. At the end of this chapter, the research significance and fine aspects of the project are addressed.In chapter 2, the actuator's design is addressed particularly, which concerns three main aspects: 1 .the mechanical structure analysis and design; 2.the electrical structure design; 3.the driving method and control. Chapter 2 also discusses the problems mentioned above deeply and systematically. Specifically, in the mechanical structure, a new type of structure for heat compensation are presented and validated by relevant experiments. On the other hand, the heat compensation methods, the magnetic field simulations of the GMA are mentioned.In chapter 3, the static and dynamic models of the actuator are concerned. In addition, the mechatronical coupling model and magnetic field model concerned GMM rod are introduced briefly. Also the all kinds theories of the GMA are studied, including the heat compensation theory.In chapter 4, the static and dynamic properties of the experiment based on the GMA are addressed. On the other hand, the relative characteristics between the inputand the output of the GMA are presented.In the chapter 5, the conclusion of the experimental is given. In the end, all achievements of the dissertation are summarized and the further research work which will be done are put forward in the end chapter.
