In recent years, along with the augment of cars in cities, the traffic jam and environment polluting become progressively. Thus, the vehicle location and navigation system has become the focus of the world. This dissertation is mainly to design and realize a GSM based GPS vehicle location and navigation system, which based on the study of the applications of GPS in the vehicle location and navigation system and the applications of GSM mobile communication system, and to discuss the feasibility about the system by experiment.Firstly, the article investigates the GPS location technique, which used in vehicle location and navigation system, studies the basic theory of GPS location, the causation of location error and the error analyzing, then giving the location dataprocessing model-Kalman filtering model and the selection of parameters used instatic situation or in dynamic situation in the model. When the GSM based gate-way is designed and realized, the paper emphasizes the short message communication technique used in transmitting location data, involves short message actualization unit, protocol configuration, receiving/transmitting process, data PDU encapsulation, data coding, and so on. Secondly, the dissertation also researches the hardware composing of the system, involving the operational principle and technic guide line of SUPERSTAR GPS receiver, GSM-JD1 modem and RS-232 serial port. Based on the research, the GPS location data transmitting software and the monitor center software of the GSM based GPS vehicle location and navigation system designed in this article, is designed by the computer communication technology, serial communication technique and VC++ 7.0 integrated developing environment, and the system with its constitute parts are realized. The paper also depicts the collection of GPS data, the data coding in transmission and the data matching with the digital map of the system in detailed. Finally, experiment is done via the system designed in this article, form analyzing the theories and the experiment data of the real-time and the reliability of the system, the feasibility of this system is validated.
