The discussed content of this task relates to Electrorheological Fluid (ERF) shock absorber and its control system. Works as follows were done in this thesis based on understanding the mechanism of ER effect, knowing the research and development of ER materials and their application.(1) The fluid's rheological behavior in the ER valve of an ERF shock absorber has been analyzed and developed. Applying the theory of rheodynamics and hydraulic theory, a relationship of damping vs vibratory velocity and electric field strength has been set up. The relationship is valuable foundation for improving on the mechanism of ERF shock absorber and studying the velocity property.(2) Because of road random excitations, sensors' measure error, load changing and the effect of temperature on ER fluids, the behavior of vehicle suspension is uncertain. The adaptive controlling strategy which is composed of the on-line identification of model parameters and the least-square-error self-tuning regulator is adopted to control the automotive semi-active suspension system which is composed of an ERF intelligent shock absorber. The simulation results showed the feasibility and effectiveness of the control scheme.(3) An Microcomputer controlling system has been outlined in order for the require of real time availably controlling the automotive semi-active suspension system with an ERF shock absorber. There are two high single chip Microcomputers in the controlling device. One operates data acquisition, the other operates calculation and controlling output. Microcomputers exchange data by serial communication.
