The pyrolysis of scrap tires is to achieve energy recovery buy converting tires to oil, char and gas. The focus of this study is the pyrolytic oil derived from the pilot-scale pyrolysis of scrap tires in a rotary kiln. The oil was studied in detail from different aspects, the results of which showed the effect of pyrolytic temperature on the properties of the oil and the characteristics of the pyrolysis reaction in the rotary kiln reactor. Moreover, buy such analytical work, a foundation for estimation on the application of the pyrolytic oil was laid.The temperature effect on the oil yield was discussed at first. Then, analytical work was carried out as follows: the ultimate analysis and physi-chemical analysis of the pyrolytic oil comprised a sketch of the fuel properties of the oil; Then, through the distillation analysis of the oil, the fraction composition of the "unrefined"oil was known. After that, a general knowledge of the aromaticity and saturation of the hydrocarbons in the oil was provided by the outcome of the FT-IR functional group analysis. Also, from the analysis, the form of the polar functional groups and their distribution in different fractions of the oil were learned.Then, the oil fractions from distillation were further studied. The naphtha fraction of the pyrolytic oil was objected to GC analysis. The above-middle fraction underwent GC analysis too after chemical class separation. The chemical composition of the pyrolytic oil was clearly known this way. More attention was paid to the valuable volatile aromatics like BTX and the biologically active PAHs. Also, through comparison the pyrolytic oil with tire-derived-oil from different reactors, the characteristics of the pyrolysis reaction in the rotary kiln reactor can be followed. And the chemical reactions in the pyrolysis process were also discussed.Aided by the study of the mechanism of the particle movement and heat transfer in the rotary kiln, a mathematical model on tire pyrolysis in a rotary kiln was set up. based on the kinetic study of tire pyrolysis reaction. And the computational outcome was compared with the experiment results.Finally, with complete knowledge of the composition and properties of the pyrolytic oil, estimation of its application was possible. The application was discussed from two aspects: as a fuel when the tire pyrolysis scale is small and as feedstock for further treatment when the tire pyrolysis plant reached a certain scale.
