Compared to other types of internal combustion engines, diesel engines that are used more and more widely are more fuel-efficient, provide highest torque and pulling capability, are lower emitters of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide, but diesel engines can emit up to 30 times more particulate matter than gasoline engines. Thus, the effective control of emission of diesel engine particles is significant for the development of environmental protection an automobile industries. Related studies have shown that Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is the most effective method to reduce the emission of diesel engine particles thoroughly. However, techniques of DPF and regeneration adopting in China presently is still not immature in technical aspect of after-treatment. DPF of infrared regeneration system has been experimented and researched in this paper. It has been tested for the filter efficiency, regeneration efficiency, the controllability of regenerating process, cost, life and the suitability to fuel with high sulfur. Through such tests, infrared regenerating method has been proved to have the advantages of both simple result and reliable regeneration, up to international advanced level in properties, and suited fuel quality of our country. All of this has solved key technical problems that exist in practical application of DPF in China. Such after-treatment system is just the one that is suited to our national situation and that can bring hugely social and economic benefit. Using this technique, the particles emission of Chinese diesel engine will be up to or even over the European II criterion, and the international competition of Chinese diesel engine industry will be enhanced too. At the same time, this paper has still discussed the feasibility and realistic meaning that the infrared regenerating system is installed in marine diesel engines.
