The performance and emissions of diesel engine are strongly determined by the combustion process which in turn has a lot to do with fuel spray characteristics. The conical spray can improve the mixing of fuel and air, and hence lead to good performance and emissions. While due to the shot penetration of conical spray under high load the performance and exhaust emissions deteriorate.The third generation conical spray-adjustable penetration spray is developed by combining spray impingement and former two generations conical spray.High speed photography is employed to research the spray characteristics. The effect of different impingment parameter on the spray characteristics is analyzed. Test result shows that the impinging angle has an important effect on the spray characteristics. The spray momentum lost increases and the penetration decreases with increased impinging angel, while the vertical and horizontal distribution increases. Opening pressure has also a little effect on the spray characteristic.Based on the research result of spray characteristics the performance comparison test of several kinds of the third generation conical spray is carried out on a 135 diesel test-bed. The effect of different diesel parameters such as spray impingement mode and fuel supply advanced angle and injection opening pressure on the performance and emissions is compared and analyzed. The result shows that the fuel consumption and emissions are both improved by using the third generation conical spray compared to original multi-hole nozzle spray. The adjustable penetration spatial multi-layer-sector spray shows desirable combustion effect, by using which fuel consumption and soot and NOx emissions are dramatically reduced compared to original diesel.Some instructive results to the designing and applying of new generation conical spay system are obtained by having a primary research on the spray and combustion characteristics of the third generation conical spray.
