Along with development of heavy burden electric railway and development of high speed electric railway, the problem of passing over of neutral section is becoming one of the principal problems that should be solved urgently. Based on the project of "the developing of high voltage thyristor vale for auto-passing over neutral section of traction power supply system", funded by Railway Ministry of China, the paper researches the application of high voltage thyristor vale to automatic passing over of neutral section equipment and solves its application design and controlling problem.Firstly the paper summarized the methods of passing over of neutral section and its application status quo in the domestic and oversea. As the research object of the paper, the reason of over-voltage caused by the method of ground transfer by vacuum breaker is analyzed though simulation and experiment. And based on the analyze, a method of automatic passing over of neutral section using thyristor vale to controlling the phase of electric power is presents.The technical specification of high voltage thyristor vale using in automatic passing over of neutral section is analyzed too. Based on the specification, the right phase control thyristor is chosen and the series number of thyristor is calculated. The paper also calculates the power loss of thyristor under the pulsing load, choosing the heat sink and forecast the temperature rising.The paper analyzed the dynamic process of series thyristor in detail and designed the snubber circuit and BOD protecting circuit against over-voltage for thyristor. A PSPICE simulation mode of series thyristor based on dynamic process is set up and the simulation verifies the validity of the snubber circuit.A indirect fiber-trigger system is adopted for high voltage thyristor vale, which solves the problem of high voltage insulation and improves the capability against interfering and the reliability of the control signal. The thyristor gate electronics is also designed.A real-time monitor system for high voltage thyristor vale is developed, which monitors the faults of over-current, over-voltage in the system and situation of thyristor failure and BOD activation. The hardware and software of monitor system is illuminated.Finally the high voltage thyristor vale was tested in lab. The results illuminate thegood insulation structure, reliable triggering and blocking, good voltage division on each thyristor, and that the BOD protecting circuit acts rapidly. In a word the high voltage thyristor vale satisfies the expected specification in the application of auto-passing over neutral section of traction power supply system.
