The perfluoro-sulphonate-ionomer(Nafion) membrane was modified with various organic and inorganic compounds. The thermogravimetric analysis techniques and FT-IR soectroscopy were used to ascertain the thermal degradation behavior of Nafion membrane and its modified membranes. The thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) results reveal that the additions of modification ions/compounds have great effects on the vitrifaction temperature of the membranes and their decomposition temperatures. In DSC curves, the high-temperature peak is assigned to the crystalline domains melting in Nafion, and the low-temperature peak is attributed to a transition into ionic clusters. The transition demonstrates significant change concerned with the nature of the counterion and the degree of hydration.
