As an important role of Concurrent Design(CE) , the theory and application of integrated approach for architectural and structural design were reviewed and investigated. The analysis and study were focused on the ascertainment of free surface modeling subjected to architectural project in conceptual design. A method of assessing the optimum modeling of architectural project was proposed correspondingly.Firstly, a Graphical User Interface of integrated analysis module aimed at free surface thin shell project was developed with application of the language APDL and UIDL of ANSYS, which achieve the primary integration between architectural design in CAD and structural design in CAE. The technique of NURBS applied widely in CAD was adopted to the modeling of free surface shell, and then get two type of initial architectural project of free surface shell with the platform of UG. At last, based on the shape and topology optimization theory, the optimum design oriented to foregoing initial architectural project was carried which the smallest strain energy is taken as the objective function and the rationality of optimum design was demonstrated using several numerical analysis examples.
