In the purpose of finding a rule, which can be used in the field of PIV in internal combustion engine as a criterion to choose the PIV tracer, this article is based on the present turbulent theory combined with the data from the experiment, explore the conditions under which the tracer's flowing behaviors exist and the law of the relations among the factors which can affect the tracer's flowing behaviors. According to the present knowledge of PIV and the theory of the fluent of the internal combustion engine, analyzed the forces that acting on the tracer, a new model is built to explore the problem of the PIV tracer's following behaviors in the cylinder of the internal combustion engine and educed the formula for calculating the following behaviors of the tracer in the flow field of the combustion chamber of internal combustion engine.According to the photos and the pictures of the flow field in the cylinder of internal combustion engine, which are obtained from the experiments, and the numerical simulation of StarCD, it can be concluded that the performance of the tracer used in PIV has direct correlation to the tracer's diameter the tracer's density and the tracer's ability to disperse light. Some projects to generate PIV tracers are also discussed in this paper, and two of them are validated in experiments, and the result is quite satisfying. Much work of theory and experiment are done in this paper, it is valuable for the experiment of PIV on internal combustion engine.
