It's the first time the material mechanical performance of the corrugated steel culvert which is applied to highway be systematically researched by using the finite element method. In this paper, the action of forces on the corrugated steel culvert material system about different height of filling, different culvert shape(wave length and wave height), different pipe wall thickness, different corrugated steel pipe diameter and different load(dead loads and live loads) is thoroughly analyzed, the mechanical(stress and strain) character of corrugated steel pipe is educed and the relationship between the maximal controlled stress (or strain) and the interrelated factors is summarized. Meanwhile, the corrugated steel pipe is tested on site, the mechanical performance of corrugated steel culvert during constructing is mainly analyzed and the theoretical calculated value of the finite element analysis is contrasted with the site tested value to confirm its feasibility. Finally, the recommended wall thickness of corrugated steel culvert in various cases is put forward according to the finite element analysis and the test on site.
