The practice of domestic and abroad highway construction and service shows that the damages and the lost of highway service capability have closed relation with subgrade drainage system. Among the factors making road surface damage, most of them are related to water present on or under subgrade. With the great development of highway of our country and the implementation of West Great Development, the emphasis of highway construction in our country has turned to the middle frozen northwest area and desert regions. The thesis right aims to the middle frozen climate and geology condition and study general theory of subgrade drainage and specialties for the kind of area.A philosophy theory is adopted in the thesis to probe the problem from general to special. And the phenomenon and their mechanism of subgrade water damage are analyzed and the influences of the subgrade water damage on road performance are discussed. For the particular topography, climate, and natural environmental factors, many damages in the middle frozen area are analyzed. And considering the necessity of avoiding blow-up and frost boil, some available measures, such as mat base of calking crushed rock, anti-freeze and seepage prevention insulated wall are adopted in practical roads. Tracking survey has showed that the measures are effective to eliminate the damages. Therefore the measures have great extendibility value and reality meaning for seasonal frozen and yearly frozen area.
