With the rapid development of the infrared technology, infrared image guidance is becoming the tendency of the infrared guidance technology, and one of the methods for high accuracy guidance technology. This paper studies new image preprocessing, image segmentation, characterization extraction, target recognition and system precept for the infrared image guidance.Firstly, it discusses the feature of the infrared image and infrared image guidance system, the working process of the weapons based on infrared image guidance. Secondly, it studies the theory and algorithm for image segmentation, including the segmentation methods based on the threshold selection and the segmentation methods based on the edge detection. And the lateral inhibition network and the theory of wavelet multi-scale analysis are introduced, their application in the image edge detection is studied, their feature and application are compared.In the end, this paper studies the characterization extraction using for the image recognition, including the basic characterization and the invariant characterization, and a new feature vector is constructed. These characterizations can show the basic feature of an infrared target. The experimental results of this feature vector are presented using the infrared data, which is accordance with the conclusions drawn from the theoretical analysis.
