The function of pulse power system of LIA (Linear Induction Accelerator) is generating accelerative pulse and providing it toaccelerate electronic beam synchronously. As a part of pulse power system, the primary energy storage system first stores the electric energy, then through discharge compresses and loads the stored energy to the next device. The trendecy of development of LIA is multiple-pulse, so the demands of pulse power system is increasing correspondingly, which require the pulse power be more reliable, more stable and have less jitter. For the primary energy storge system, which hase critical influence upon the performance of pulse power system, the demands increases as well. The primary energy storge system based on air core transformer, compared to the Marx generator, has less volume, less switches and less jitter. So, this work concentrates on the design, construction and test of air core transformer.First, a model of transformer has been built and analysed to formulate the expression of pulse on the load capacitor, which can demonstrate the influence of major parameters of transfomer on the charging time and efficiency of energy-transmitting. The influence of output pulse when the resistor of circuit is being took into account also has been analysed by the means of circuit simulation and approximate solution of circuit equation. The efficiency of energy-transmitting under dual nonresonant condition has been analysed and the parameters of transformer has been decided.Second, according the parameters, the dimensions of transformer is caculated. Basing on the dimensions, the insulation capability of transformer is evaluated by the means of employing the model of coaxial transmission line.The coils of transfomer has been wound and tested under circumstances of different primary capacitors. The pulse with charging time 3. 6μ s andefficiency 53% has been obtained when primary capacitor is 2 u F and coupling coefficient 0.8.Finally, a design of using multiple air cor transformers to provide energy to Blumlein pulse forming line is proposed.Its feasibility isanalysed.
