Ultrasonic motor (USM) is a new principle motor which is being developed in recent twenty year. It is playing an important role in the field of small and special motors because it not only, in mechanism, breaks through the working principle of conventional electromagnetic motors, but also, in performance, compensates their insufficiency. USM is characterized by its low speed, high torque, directly load-driving, rapidly dynamic response and simple structure. But, in view of its short history and many fields it involves in, no systematic theory on USM has been found until now.USM has various forms. Traveling wave type USM which has fully designing theory is the only form that achieves industrialization. However, the research on its transient character has just started, which confines the application level and field of USM.The main research works accomplished and creative achievements are summarized as following:1. Introducing the principle, the development history, the characteristic and the general application of USM.2. Establishing the mathematical models of the friction layer between stator and rotor in traveling wave ultrasonic motor and analyzing the friction moment based on different assumptions and different friction models.3. Designing the universal transient response measuring system of USM;introducing its general design principle and structure and the function of each part of the system and each module of the software, especially the measuring methods of the encoder.4. Analyzing and simplifying the transient procedures of USM such as start and shutdown, establishing the differential equations of the dynamic model of the transient response measuring system with the elastic coupling segment. Achieving the solution of the equations and emulating the transient character with MATLAB. Measuring the transient response character with the measuring system mentionedbefore. Comparing the emulating character and the measuring character , which proves the preciseness and the validity of the dynamic model with elastic coupling segment.
