With the rapid development of society and economy, the traffic system becomes more and more complex. In order to provide all kinds of real-time traffic information to the management of traffic system for achieving efficient management and making full use of the traffic system, the study on real-time traffic information collection system based on video image processing has been becoming a focus. As an important subsystem of real-time traffic information collection system, the paper makes the running speed of vehicles as the studying and detecting object and mainly studies on the detecting algorithms of real-time speed and other related ones. The purpose of this subject is to improve the detecting methods of real-time speed and provide more efficient references to increase the automatic and modernizing traffic management levels.This paper mainly studies on the digital image processing (DIP) algorithms related to the research subject, and develops a DIP research tool based on Visual C++ to realize and verify these algorithms, and finally chooses the proper ones by comparing and analyzing. The paper studies on the basic theories and methods of camera calibration, and discusses the methods of camera calibration of the subject, and gives the whole design idea and the concrete calibration methods, and also completes the convert between earth coordinate and image coordinate, and at last puts forward the solutions to the problems meeting in the calibration. This paper also concentrates on the detecting algorithm of real-time speed and other related ones, and even if analyzes the designing thoughts and methods deeply, including the creating and updating methods of background image, the algorithm of vehicle detection, the algorithm of vehicle tracking, and so on. An experiment platform of real-time speed information collection system is established, which can simulate the task of real-time speed collection effectively and acquire related data of experiment. Moreover, errors are analyzed and some improving measures are suggested.During designing algorithms, the solutions of some typical problems affecting the reliability of detection, such as vehicle shadow, vehicle separation in the condition of jam, vehicle detection of turning roadway, are put forward. Among them, it is an important characteristic and innovation that converting the vehicle separation in the condition of jam into reliable vehicle detection and subsequent vehicle tracking.
