Among various kinds of empty space under subgrade, gob in coal mines, is a frequently happened phenomenon in the highway survey, design and construction work. This defective geological feature often leads to subgrade instability, and damage to such infrastructures as subgrade, road surface, bridge and culvert, which poses considerable troubles to the highway projects. Thus it becomes a key issue in highway construction work for finding best ways of geological survey and as well as the treatment solution in gob where the highway crosses.Over the years, industries in China and other countries haven't established a systematic system and finalized a proven technology for the geological survey and treatment work in the gob. Coal and railway industry in China have undertaken some research work, yet it did not cover the highway engineering. As China is speeding up the development of transportation system, it becomes very crucial to find the highly accurate, systematically sound, and cost effective survey and treatment measures in this field. And providing a quality survey and feasible treatment will directly influence the highway construction work in China.Based on the survey and treatment work done on the gob under subgrade in Xuzhou Circular Highway west section of Beijing-Fuzhou Highway, this paper undertakes a thorough study on the survey and treatment measures and proposes a cost effective, practical and appropriate technique method with reference to the work of its kind in other industries at home and abroad. This paper consists of nine chapters. Chapter one as the introduction part briefs on the main research issue of this paper. Chapter two and three illustrate the current research status at home and abroad by showing the implementation and effect of the geophysical survey, engineering exploration drilling and geological investigation upon survey work in gob. Chapter four analyzes the engineering geology conditions and discusses various factors that might affect the subgrade stability in the areas concerned. Chapter five explains the treatment technology, as well as the treatment procedures and principles. Chapter six shows the treatment quality control principles and the quality inspection techniques and evaluation standard after treatment is done. Chapter seven provides a thorough analysis on the engineering geology conditions in western coal mine areas of Xuzhou, where the west section of Xuzhou Circular Highway crosses, and also summarizes the surface movement and the deformation parameters of the mine area, as well as the coverage and expansion rules of the gob yielded. Chapter eight compares Line A and Line B proposal and recommends the best solution. Chapter nine concludes the results of this research.By studying and analyzing the geological survey and treatment issues in the gob of coal mines, where the west section of Xuzhou Circular Highway, Beijing-Fuzhou Highway crosses, this paper provides a full picture of the technical issues concerned such as geological survey method, treatment technical solutions and quality inspection after treatment. It is hoped this paper could be of reference value to the projects of its kind in future.
