Optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) can optimize reactive power dispatch and reduce power loss and voltage loss in order to improve voltage quality and run electrical equipment safely and reliably. In the aspect of guaranteeing safety and economy of modern power system, the importance of optimal reactive power dispatch has received extensive attention.Essentially, optimal reactive power dispatch is the multi-restraint overall optimization problem with plentiful local minima and discrete variables. Particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) features parallel handling and good robustness etc, can deal with the mixed integer nonlinear programming problem easily and find the optimum of problem with greater probability. Its calculation efficiency is higher than traditional random methods. Its biggest advantage lies in simpleness, rapid convergence and profound intelligent background, so it is suitable for both scientific research and application on project. This paper introduces the present research and development of optimal reactive power dispatch, establishes its basic mathematic model, has studied the character and the convergence of PSO, proposes neighbourhood topology based particle swarm algorithm (NTPSO), which is more accurate than basic PSO in the concept.Applying five kinds of NTPSO to IEEE30 nodes system and IEEE57 nodes system, and compare their emulational results with that of basic genetic algorithm, the result shows Square topology based particle swarm algorithm has gotten the most ideal optimization effect, and confirmed Square topology based PSO has superiority on optimal reactive power dispatch. It offers a new thought for optimal reactive power dispatch in large-scale power system.
