Making use of grid synchronized phasor data with time scale information, PMU based wide area measurement system (WAMS) can be applied in real-time analysis, recording dynamic procedures, transient stability prediction and control, relaying protection and so on. It provides a new way for the security analysis and stability control in large-scale power system. This years, the development of GPS, power communication network and DSP makes the technology of PMU grow up quickly. It lays the solid foundation for the application of WAMS.In this article, the chapter 1 introduces the base situation, development state and development tendency of WAMS . The chapter 2 studies the design of PMU hardware structure. The chapter 3 introduces the self adaptive uniformly-spaced sampling circuit and expatiates the principles of freely setting synchronized time scale, the method of correcting phase, sampling algorithm, the reason of errors and their effects. The chapter 4 expatiates the method of designing DSP/BIOS based software.
