The arterial road in our country, has a large number of RC T-section beam bridges, however, numerous T-section beam bridges in service need to be reinforced and maintained urgently because of its bad condition in technique. Therefore the research on the reinforcement of bridges in service has the important practical value in engineering. In the numerous reinforcement technique used in RC structure, the bonding of steel plates technique has big potential and has been applied to the engineering widely just thanks to its light dead load, the small space it shares and the short construction period. As the prophase fundamental research for the compiling of Code for the Reinforcement of Highway Bridges, in this paper, the bending behavior of RC T-section beams strengthened by externally bonded steel plates was discussed. Based on the experiment of eight model T-section beams, the ultimate flexural capacity of RC T-section beams strengthened with different quantities of steel plates, initial loads and different anchoring was evaluated, and corresponding design method was formulated. From the experiments, the spacing, width and height of fracture is obviously decreased, and pasting steel plates play important role in improving RC construction durability. The ultimate flexural capacity of RC T-section beams with two points anchoring have no obvious change than that with five points anchoring. The ultimate flexural capacity of RC T-section beams with initial loads is lower than that with no initial loads. According to the experimental result, the nonlinear finite element software which offers contact analysis, concrete mass element and the birth and death capabilities is used in the whole procedures of analysis and new numerical analyzing method of flexural capacity of existing RC T-section beams strengthened by externally bonded steel plates is included. Additionally, crack width, midspan deflection and flexural stiffness were investigated and analyzed. This paper made a foundation for the compiling of Code for the Reinforcement of Highway Bridges, and provided references to practical bridge rehabilitation projects.
